It has been confirmed that a vehicle that caught fire on the A34 yesterday contained oxygen cylinders and a fuel gas cylinder.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a vehicle fire on the A34 northbound near East Ilsley at around 9am yesterday (10/8).

Crews from Newbury and Whitley Wood fire stations were sent to the scene alongside a water carrier and two officers.

When they arrived they found a vehicle containing three oxygen cylinders and an acetylene cylinder was on fire.

Firefighters put a cordon around the incident to protect the public before safely removing the cylinders and extinguishing the fire.

Crews were on the scene for five hours and 20 minutes.

Traffic was stopped in both directions between the M4 and A4185, causing long delays on the A34 and severe delays in Wantage on the A417 and A338 due to diverting traffic.
